Scoring – based on points assigned to one of three parent types:

  • 40 – 30: You identify with parent type strongly
  • 29 – 20: You identify with parent type moderately
  • 19 – 10: You identify with parent type mildly
  • Dependency Based Needs:0
  • Reward Based Needs:0
  • Fear Based Needs:0
  • Overall Score:0

Fear-Based Needs parent types often keep children from developing the skills to make sound decisions and evaluate risks. This tendency prevents kids from learning how to keep themselves safe. These parents try to keep their kids in a bubble of protection instead of helping them learn how navigate potentially dangerous situations.

Reward-Based Needs parent types set unrealistic expectations for their child, fostering a feeling that no matter how hard they try, it will never be enough. Rewards become paramount over allowing the child to learn from mistakes and grow in confidence through exploration. This often leads to feelings of inadequacy as they fail to meet parental standards.

Dependency-Based Needs parent types can be detrimental to a child's development and confidence. Parents may find themselves doing everything for their children, from homework assignments to daily living activities, in an effort to show love. What they need instead is to experiment with their autonomy. Giving them the freedom to problem-solve on their own develops self-sufficient life skills that allow them to take pride in contributing around the home or with other responsibilities.
